Writing this letter has not come easy and maybe that, in itself, is a reflection of where we are right now. There has been a lot happening, both personally and within the industry we love so much. And yet, in the midst of it all, one thing has remained constant: YOU, our LEWATLE community.
Thank you for your continued support and belief in what we are building. Making this
issue was a challenge. There is a certain pressure that comes with keeping on, you
want to do better, be more, say more. I can’t believe we’re on the 6th one.
Our cover stars are four individuals who embody the future of storytelling in film and
television in Africa. Ntokozo Mlaba, Naledy Selepe, Letlhogonolo Masipa and
Tshepiso Jeme are creatives who are redefining what it means to take up space in
the industry. Our cover concept leans into a playful, almost nostalgic energy. Set in a
lounge environment, the photography captures a relaxed, sitcom-inspired moment.
One that doesn’t take itself too seriously, yet speaks volumes. We wanted to show our
filmmakers in their element. Fully immersed in their craft. The overall intention behind
this issue is really to give flowers where they’re due.
We feature a photo series by Thabisa Nxawe that is quite powerful. Her work
demands your attention. It invites you to pause and feel.
The Colour Me Blue series is also one story we’re excited to publish. A series by Karabo Mokoena that’s currently in development. I am so inspired. It’s projects like these that remind me of the possibilities that still exist within the industry, even in uncertain times. The beautiful look and feel of the series was brought to life by
Khayalihle Phakathi at 40 Season, a post-production studio that’s definitely on the
rise.
For over a decade, we’ve watched Lerato Marabe grow and evolve in front of us.
Through her journey, we explore not just her career, but the impact of longevity and
resilience. And then there’s Mo Ntsamai, an Art Director of note! To know Mo, is to love
her.
So, as you page through Issue 6, I invite you to sit with it. Engage with it. Celebrate the
stories within it, told by our talented team of writers. And most importantly, may we
never lose the joy of making something impactful out of nothing and calling it “work”.
We’re a special breed. Please enjoy.
Love, always!
